Thank you to everyone who joined us for the 11th Annual Big Apple Barbecue Block Party presented by Southern Living!
To each of the 17 outstanding pitmasters who weathered Tropical Storm Andrea to set up their rigs, fire the pits and have delicious 'cue ready for Saturday morning--THANK YOU! Your commitment to authentic pit barbecue and Southern hospitality is what makes the Big Apple Barbecue Block Party so special.

To our partners, participating chefs, fantastic bands and artists, the event is only as dynamic as you are and we greatly appreciate your unending support and creativity.

We are proud to support the Madison Square Park Conservancy - an inspiring organization that has been our formidable host for the past 10 years.

A grand thanks (and perhaps a bear hug) to the people and businesses that have been the glue that binds all these amazing partners of the Big Apple Barbecue Block Party together: Union Square Events, Blue Smoke and Union Square Hospitality Group.

Here are some tips to help you make the most of your barbecue experience:

    • Arrive on time. And by “on time”, we mean EARLY (lines start to form at 10:30am). ‘Cue lovers know that the early bird gets the…brisket, whole hog, ribs and more!

    • Pack a picnic blanket. Park benches fill up fast, so the lawn is a great place to enjoy your delicious Southern fare.

    • Stop at the ATM. While most of the weekend’s activities are free, food and beverage purchases are cash-only. (FastPasses will be honored as usual.)

    • Snag front row seats. Great music is everywhere, and the culinary and mixology seminars this year are truly spectacular. To find your best viewing spot, we recommend arriving to the designated area 10-15 minutes before the show begins.

    • Grab a Giveaway. Visit the Southern Living tent for giveaways and games. It’s great for kids, or as a pit stop between pitmasters.

    • Getting there is easy. Whether you’re walking, biking, or coming by subway…the options are endless. The closest subway stops are 6 to 28th or 23rd streets, N/R to 23rd street.

From the Big Apple to the Mile High City, Danny Meyer’s Union Square Events and Blue Smoke along with Jim ‘N Nick’s Bar-B-Q and Downtown Denver Events are proud to present the Big Denver Barbecue Block Party. On Saturday & Sunday, August 4-5, 2012, locals and culinary enthusiasts from across the region can feast on barbecue while enjoying live music and cooking demos.

The sister event of New York City’s acclaimed barbecue extravaganza, the Big Denver Barbecue Block Party gathers eight of the country’s best pitmasters to cook authentic pit barbecue on-site against the beautiful backdrop of Skyline Park – think whole hogs in smokers, thousands of sausage links, pounds of pulled pork and more – and will also feature six live musical performances and four cooking demonstrations.

The confirmed roster to-date includes eight award-winning pitmasters, three of whom founded the Big Apple Barbecue Block Party ten years ago:

Kenny Callaghan, founding pitmaster (Blue Smoke, New York, NY)

We like social media. A lot. With 17 pitmasters hailing from all parts of the country, it's a great way to keep in touch throughout the year. Like the time...well if you're not following us on Twitter, we're not going to just spill the beans. So join the conversation, especially this weekend!

We'll be hosting a ReTweet Giveaway whenever the mood moves us, quite possibly inspired by the smell of the grills going and the sounds of laughter echoing throughout the park. So be on your toes because it could be as early as 11:01am on Saturday, or as late as 5:59pm on Sunday.

Tune in because the quickest on the draw gets the goods!

Today's playlist is from pitmaster Patrick Martin of Martin's Barbecue Joint in Nashville, Tennessee.

Of the Big Apple Barbecue Block Party, of which Patrick and Martin's Barbecue Joint has participated in for multiple years, he's said:

"It's just such a great event, arguably the best in the nation and it just stuns me every year how awesome the people are"...We couldn't agree more and right back at you buddy.

Like the signature Baby Back Ribs at 17th Street BBQ, music is a family affair. And as such, this edition of "Pitmaster Picks" features `cue tunes selected by pitmaster Mike Mills, along with those picked by his children, grandchildren and the staff at 17th Street. So whether you're a fan of Black Eyed Peas or Glen Campbell, chances are it's a playlist the whole family will enjoy jamming out to!

(Disclaimer: the Mills family chose Jewel's version of "Sweet Home Alabama", though the player doesn't stock it so we've added the iconic tune from Lynyrd Skynryd in its place.)

Congratulations to friend and Big Apple Barbecue Block Party supporter, John T. Edge Director of the Southern Foodways Alliance, for being awarded the 2012 MFK Fisher Distinguished Writing Award by the James Beard Foundation for his article in last May's issue of Saveur entited "BBQ Nation".

Please join John T. and our friends at SFA for the Potlikker Film Festival hosted by Blue Smoke on June 8th to kick-off the Big Apple Barbecue Block Party!

Yesterday The New York Times Dining asked its Twitter followers for their favorite #kitchenplaylist and it got us thinking...what `cue tunes inspire the country's best pitmasters?

So we decided to ask, and below is the first of what we hope to become a series of Pitmaster Picks

Kicking it off is Blue Smoke's pitmaster and executive chef, Kenny Callaghan.
